Panoptic Posters

Product shot for my boards. i didnt like it flat.

Looks nice right?
Aww look at lovely angus reading about religion.

Photos of the product. They're pretty bad like, but there's one for each DPS.

This is layout of double page spreads is pretty straight forward but reasonably effective. I like having the layout as very consistent.

This is the reverse of the image below and would be inside the folded sheet.

Initial booklet idea for exhibitional purposes. Its a folded A3 sheet. At the crit it was decided that i need to put more information explaining the context of each poster and the theory. I took this design then developed it into a booklet.

The series all together! looks pretty damn good, even though i say so myself.

I was slightly dubious about the yellow when i was printing, thinking that perhaps it would be too light and that maybe i should try something a bit more orangey. The print does fade into the white very slightly but it came out much better than expected.

I think the blur/religion print is my favourite in the series. the circular design works really well with the triangle and the blue printed really well. it's cool to be using a variety of colours for a change as well, really adds something to the series, i think this may well become a regular idea with my work in series.

The Green came out pretty patchy. Maybe the pigment/binder ratio wasn't quite right again, but it does add to the individualism of the prints - they're not ruined, its just a that they have a few watermarks and so on. The screen wasn't cleaned out to the best standard either (i only realised this after printing, was pretty annoyed).

Colour screen prints! The red did not come out quite as dark as i expected - pigment/binder ratio was not quite right. The prints themselves came out pretty good.

Monoprints of my final designs!

No real development for these background designs. I just knew i wanted a different one for each print design and a different colour but for them to be themed i wanted them to be emanating from the top of the hierarchical triangle.

The pencil drawings were traced and then filled in to emphasise the solidity of the shape. the hand rendered aesthetic is much more interesting than the vectors i started out with. the "anan" in "thananywhere" is not very legible tho.
hmm. error.

Each design for the series has each line measured out so that the letters are the same width on each line in order to fulfil the solid blocky aesthetic that i was aiming for.
The designs will include one for:
CCTV
SCHOOL
WORK
RELIGION

After looking at quotes by social theorists on panopticism, i decided that they were a little long winded for a high impact poster design and so started thinking about writing my own statements that give examples and explain the theory and how it can be applied to a variety of social situations. To further explain the theory, more information will be provided in a booklet that i plan to design as an accompaniment for exhibitional purposes.

Blocky text! visually, this is finally getting somewhere. Despite the fact that there are no spaces between words to aid legibility, the shape is very well suited. I did however, decide to go with simple design and leave out the circle.

Condensed hand rendered type does not fill the space sufficiently for the overall image. Although it does create the necessary triangle shape, it does not create a solid mass which is something i would like to achieve to imply the solidity of panopticism. Measuring out the the space needed for each letter definitely helps to create the triangle shape tho.

Having quite a long statement is very interesting but it is very complicated to get the space filled properly and the triangle shape needs refining to avoid looking too rough. Also, changing the position of the triangle is necessary. Just having it floating in space seems a little odd and it means that the background imagery will extend downwards.

Hand rendered examples using a variety of quotes from songs, Michel Foucault and Jeremy Bentham.

Text inside image works well, especially when the layout fits the shape of the triangle like in the two right hand images. Having a shorter statement improves the impact of the image as well.

Incorporating text and image next to each other does not work fantastically, at least as above. the horizontal lines are interesting but there is too much text for them to be appropriately punchy.

This is taken from the song 'if you feel attacked by feminism, its probably a counter attack' by ONSIND. i started looking into finding statements in relation to panopticism. This seemed appropriate.

Just playing around with the image. this looks cool and tessellates nicely but kinda defeats the entire point of the triangle and hierarchies.

This is supposed to show hierarchies within hierarchies, each with observers and the observed.

My initial response to the brief was to use the typical imagery of a social hierarchy - a triangle. the separation between the top of the hierarchy and the bottom is supposed to emphasise the idea of observer / observed. This is further suggested with the circle.
